Mahavir Janma Kalyanak also known as Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth of Lord Mahavir. In 2018, Mahavir Jayanti will be celebrated on March 29, Thursday. He is the 24th and last Tirthankar in Jainism. This day is celebrated as a religious festival organized annually by Jain community in India. The name Mahavir or Mahaveer was given to him due to his extraordinary spiritual knowledge and his teachings to the world, His original name was ‘Vardhama’. The birth of Lord Mahavir goes back to 599BC. On the 13th day of raising moon of Chitra month, Lord Mahavir was born in the royal family of Kundgraam to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala with great beauty, exceptional physic, and the extraordinary spiritual strength.
Despite being born in a royal family, Mahavir maintained a distance from the materialistic world right from an early age. At the age of 30, he left his royal palace and started living with strict disciple for 12 years. Most of the time during these years he spent in meditation under the Ashoka tree. At the age of 42, he attained omniscience.
Mahavir or Mahaveer is celebrated as the founder Jainism. He had also laid down the principles if Jainism that includes ‘Satya’, ‘Ahimsa’ and ‘Brhamacharya’.
