One of the most celebrated and revered figures in the Hindu mythology – Lord Hanuman, the Monkey God is known for his invincible powers. People in India venerate him with many different names, Pavanputra, Bajrangbali, Raam Bhakt, Kesari Nandan, Maruti, Anjaneya. Hanuman is the son of Anjana and Kesari and is also called the son of Wind God Vayu. He was one of the central characters in the epic Ramayana. Lord Hanuman’s childhood tales full of bravery and valour still astonish all of us. In this episode of Indipedia Edward Sonnenblick, our firangi host who is also a big ‘Bhakt’ of Lord Hanuman talks about what makes Lord Hanuman the Real Superhero.

Reincarnation Of Lord Shiva

According to some legends of Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Shiva. Anjana was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and wished him to be her son so that she gets rid of the curse given to her by a sage in the celestial palace of Lord Brahma where she was a beautiful apsara named Punjikasthala.

Hanuman- Disfigured Jaw

The name ‘Hanuman’ was given after Lord Indra threw his Vajra on ‘Anjaneya’ when little Hanuman thought Sun to be a ripe mango and tried eating it. To save earthlings from the darkness as a result of no sun, Indra used his vajra to hit Hanuman who fell from the sky resulting in a damaged jaw.

In Sanskrit ‘Hanu’ means Jaw and ‘Man’ means ‘disfigured’. Hence, Hanuman means ‘Disfigured Jaw’.

Applied Sindoor on His Body

This incident happened when Hanuman once saw Goddess Sita applying Sindoor on her forehead. When asked the reason She replied by saying it to be a sign of her unconditional love and respect towards Lord Rama. Hanuman then covered his entire body to prove his love and respect for Lord Ram.

Lord Ram was impressed with his love and granted him a boon of ‘Sankatmochan’. The one who takes all difficulties out of life.

Once rejected Goddess Sita’s Gift

One of the most interesting and popular tales of Hanuman includes when goddess Sita once gave Hanuman a beautiful necklace of pearl. The Monkey God politely declined the gift saying he will not accept anything that bears no existence of Ram. In order to prove himself, Hanuman tore open his chest to reveal an image of both Ram and Sita in his heart.
